Conrad signs with Chivas; Heineman updates offseason moves

Well, it's now official: Jimmy Conrad has signed a contract with Chivas USA. Now they get to have one of the most literate, affable, knowledgeable (and many other "-ables") athletes in America on their team.

His first official game with the Goats, of course, will come on March 19 against Sporting Kansas City. Conrad spent 7 seasons in KC, winning the MLS Defender of the Year Award in 20-5. He was a five-time MLS All-Star and was named to the MLS Best XI four times.

"It’s truly an honor to be part of the Chivas family. I’m excited to come to an organization with so much history behind the name," said Conrad. "I look forward to making Chivas USA fans proud on and off the field. I look forward to helping turn things around." (

Robb's Big Soccer updates

In case you are, like me, not a regular on Big Soccer, you might have missed some

"tidbits" of news from Sporting KC president Robb Heineman.

Among the choice nuggets:

T was a really good trip - much better than we were even anticipating. There are a couple of players from the trip that we are bringing in to preseason and have legitimate shots at making the team. What may have been the most encouraging were a few of the really young players we saw. We'll definitely need to keep track of them and see what our angle may be to bring them in to Kansas City as our residential training setting is developed in 2011/12 in kck.

As we know thanks to

Thad at the Back Post

, two of those players are Daneil Cyrus and Sheldon Bateau. Both are young.

We've had one DP deal fall completely apart on us. In the final stages the numbers basically doubled, so off the table. We have another one that we are working on for an attacking player - young - that I'm hopeful of, but we'll see.

Heineman told me a few weeks ago this was part of the process they dreaded; he said that, often with Latin American players, a shockingly high agent fee will crop up as soon as the deal seems to be done. And, no, I don't know the name of the player he's speaking of.

Monday we had our first contact with an attacking mid/winger who would not be DP money (but close). He would b incredible IMO.

Sort of like Ryan Smith last year?

Center backs continue to be a focus with one on the cusp and two more in early negotiations. None of these guys is cheap - not DP money. Basically all the guys we are looking at are under 25. Not to say we won't sign an older player, but not currently on the radar.

In other words, "wait until after the draft."

No trades pending....

Something tells me that a deal fell through sometime between re-entry draft stages that wiped a trade possibility off the boards.

Kempin an All American

Kansas City's first home-grown player Jon Kempin was named to the

National Soccer Coaches Association Youth All American team.
