New Jersey-born Giuseppe Rossi scored twice and assisted on another goal to lead Villarreal over visiting Dinamo Zagreb 3-0 Thursday night and into the second round of the Europa League.
Rossi, who chose to play for Italy's national team rather than the United States, converted a penalty kick in the 25th minute. His flick set up Marco Ruben's goal in the 64th, and Rossi added his third goal of the competition in the 80th. Rossi has 11 goals in all competitions this season.
Liverpool advanced with a 1-1 draw at Steaua Bucharest, going ahead on Milan Jovanovic's 19th-minute header before Eder Bonfim tied it.
Guillaume Hoarau scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain made the second round with a 4-2 win against Sevilla, and Besiktas won 2-1 at CSKA Sofia to join FC Porto in qualifying from its group, knocking out the Bulgarian club in the process.
Eighteen teams have advanced, and six more will follow in two weeks. Eight teams drop down to the second round from the Champions League, including Glasgow Rangers, Spartak Moscow and Twente.
