The Full 90

Breaking down the Wizards' 2-1 win over Manchester United

The goals

•The Wizards’ Davy Arnaud opened the scoring in the 11th minute when he ran onto a great pass from Kei Kamara and broke in all alone on goalkeeper Ben Amos. Arnaud slid a shot from the left side into the right side of the goal.

•In the 40th minute, Jimmy Conrad was shown a red card after his slide tackle on Dimitar Berbatov in the penalty box. Berbatov converted the ensuing penalty kick. The shame of it was that it appeared Conrad got the ball cleanly.

•The Wizards regained the lead in the 43rd minute when Kei Kamara headed home a Ryan Smith corner kick. The ball struck the crossbar and went down and did not appear as though the ball completely cleared the line.

Rough stuff

•In the 62nd minute, Manchester United’s Mame Biram Diouf knocked Roger Espinoza to the turf with a shoulder charge as the ball was headed out of bounds. Not only did Espinoza go flying, but it preserved the corner kick for Man U.

•A minute later, Darron Gibson was shown a yellow card after a rough sliding challenge into the Wizards’ Davy Arnaud.

Nice saves

•Manchester United’s Nani uncorked a hard shot in the 31st minute that was nicely turned away by goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.

•A minute later, Nielsen pushed aside a header from Nani.

•Wizards backup goalkeeper Eric Kronberg made a diving save on a shot by Mame Biram Diouf.

•Man U’s Ben Amos went sprawling to stop a blast from Jack Jewsbury in the 69th minute.

Near goals

•Manchester United’s Tom Cleverly dribbled in on the left side of the box and sent a hard cross that went off Danny Welbeck, who was alone in front of the goal in the 79th minute. But the ball bounced off Welbeck and went wide.

•Two minutes later, Federico Macheda’s diving header went off Eric Kronberg.

He couldn’t do that twice

Early in the second half, the Wizards’ Kei Kamara was battling Ryan Giggs for a ball near the corner flag. Kamara blasted the ball toward the sideline but it went mostly up instead of toward the sideline. The ball stayed in play and dropped between the two players and Kamara gained possession and dribbled up field.

Nice moves

Manchester United’s Gabriel Obertan split deftly two Wizards defenders and drove hard toward the end line before his pass across the box was intercepted.
