ESPN reports that U.S. international midfielder Sal Zizzo will join Major League Soccer
after his contract with German team Hannover 96 ended. Sources tell ESPN he'll be placed in a weighted lottery, with D.C. United and the Kansas City Wizards standing the best chance to land him. This draft could take place as early as Wednesday.
Zizzo was capped at both the U-20 and U-23 level for the United States. He's a product of UCLA. He's also recovering from an ACL tear and is probably a long-term project.
If this all sounds vaguely familiar, the Wizards won a similar weighted lottery with teenage prospect Luis Gil. However, Gil wanted to play within a 20 hour drive of the Pacific Ocean, so his rights were traded to Real Salt Lake.
And KC missed out on the next big thing in MLS.
If I were a betting man, I'd put a bit more money on D.C. snagging him than KC. I also believe in conspiracy theories.
