Quotes on a draw in Colorado

What the players/coaches had to say after Saturday's 1-1 draw between the Colorado Rapids and Kansas City Wizards.

Wizards head coach Peter Vermes On the game:

“Honestly, I think we should have walked away with the three points. I think that the way we played the dominance in the game, how dominant we were in a lot of areas, and it was extremely evident in the first half. We are playing away from home. They have to drive the game for their fans and to try to play and entertain but we really closed them down. I thought that the chances that with we created, we really should have gotten one more out of that to really take the game to them at 2-0. We did not give ourselves a chance to ice the game.”

“Tonight there were two things that really stood out. Other than the fact that we played and pressed the game, I think that we have had a strong mentality after three games in eight days to be able to fight and deal with being tired among other things and hold on to the tie at least away from home when you know the other team has to drive the game is a big, big positive for this team.”

“I think we had a let down on the goal and we didn’t pressure the ball enough in the middle of the midfield and they had too much time to pick out Casey but walking out with a tie having four points after two road game and three games in eight days I am proud of the guys for sure.”

On the specific players:

“I thought that Craig Rocastle played really well and he kept anticipating when Colorado was playing in the back to keep pressure on them so they could not find an attacker to get out. His anticipation was great tonight.”

“We are getting consistency in are play now. It is hard when you have to mix and match as many guys as we were. I think that we lost a lot of continuity. Stephane [Auvray] is a key ingredient in the way we keep our shape from front to back and back to front and he is also a good transition guy. When we win the ball he can play it forward quickly and get us on the attack. Like I said there were a lot of mismatches in the game and that is why Palguta got switched early and then Earls came on and Kai [Kamara] was just able to have his way on that side.”

On the team at this point in the season:

“My statement would be very simple and that would be that I think our guys realize our record may not necessarily show what kind of team we have been and how we have been play. I want to preface that by saying we have at times played poorly and have given up soft goals but outside of that our guys have a belief that we have been playing well and that we can play with any team in the league. Coming on the road it was there mentality to go after them.”

Wizards midfielder Davy Arnaud Thoughts on the game

“Overall I think if we would have started on this road trip and said we would get four points from three games we would have been happy with that. Looking back at tonight I like to say we went up early and if we would have gotten the second one we could have closed the game out. This is not an easy place to come and play and they are a good team and this is tough place to come and get points. Like I said if we could have gotten that second we could have gotten all three points.”

On the Wizards’ goal

“The ball came into Teal [Bunbury] up top and he played a good ball off to Craig [Rocastle] and I made the third man run in behind and no one tracked me. Craig then played a good ball into space and I just tried to put it inside the far post.”

On game strategy

“We have said that what makes us good is we come out and play aggressively and we don’t try to set back. We try to get out and be aggressive no matter who we are playing. We wanted to send guys forward to put teams under pressure. That was our game plan tonight and also our game plan in Columbus. We have seen that when we play that way we put ourselves in a good position to get results.”

Rapids head coach Gary Smith On the game

“There’s no doubt about it Kansas City were a better club than us for a good period of the game. And really on another day this game might have been out of sight for us, but in the end we had a chance to win it.”

On what was said to the team after the game

“Yeah, we were in there longer and there were some disappointments and some thing to talk about and moving forward how do we correct them. Just really a lack of energy, in the opening half especially and the inability to breakdown Kansas City and of course, going behind. Just a few things while they were fresh in all our minds.”

On the team’s form of late compared to the good start to the season:

“I think in the end we are very fortunate to get a point from tonight, which I have not had to say in the long time. I don’t have an answer for that. The players trained well all week. Were bright and look forward to the challenge with an opportunity at home having been away three of the last four to try and put three points on the board and excite the home fans again and it didn’t work out that way.”

Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni On the game

“I think we played flat and a bit timid. They came out and found a way to score off a throw in from their side of the half, which is uncharacteristic of us and set the tone for a tough match. It speaks volume for our team to be in a dog fight and find a way to come back and tie it with a great chance to win it in the end. It’s a long season so to sit here and dwell on one game is useless. We just have to turn our focus to a good week of training and playing well in Seattle.”
