The Los Angeles Galaxy, the league's best team, has a league-best four All Stars: Forwards Edson Buddle and Landon Donovan, defender Omar Gonzalez and goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.
The list of 11 players, who captured the most votes among their peers, will join 12 other players, including 10 coach’s picks and two Commissioner’s selections, which are set to be announced on Monday, July 19 on MLSsoccer.com (12 p.m. CT). A holding midfielder like Stephane Auvray might be a good fit for this unbalanced team.
Here's the full First XI:
Donovan Ricketts (LA Galaxy)
Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Jamison Olave (Real Salt Lake)
Guillermo Barros Schelotto (Columbus Crew), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Dwayne De Rosario (Toronto FC), Javier Morales (Real Salt Lake), Marco Pappa (Chicago Fire)
Edson Buddle (LA Galaxy), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy)
Most of these picks (Buddle, Donovan, De Rosario, Morales, Gonzalez, Olave) are not up for discussion. I believe those are six of the best players in the league period. But I think a good case could be made for Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake) or Jimmy Nielsen (KC) over Ricketts. The Wizards tweeted that Jimmy Nielsen finished second in fan voting.
Also, I think Schelotto and Marshall are included because of who they are not how they've been playing. I personally feel that Donovan should've been slotted as a midfielder so Alvaro Saboro (RSL) could get a start and Drew Moor (Colorado) is having a far superior season to Marshall thus far. For that matter, San Jose's Ike Opara is too.
Will a Wizard be named to the team next Monday? Should one be? Do you even want to watch the All-Star game?
