Surprising absolutely no one, Major League Soccer announced today that it will expand (again) into the Great White Canadian North, adding USSF Division II team the Montreal Impact
to the fold.
“We are proud to welcome Montreal, the second-largest French-speaking city in the world and a multicultural metropolis whose residents are deeply passionate about the world’s game, to Major League Soccer,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said Friday.
Let's all cross our fingers they decide to change the name before then. Impact is the worst nickname in all of sports. And I'm including the WNBA.
The obvious next question: Who's next? It only makes sense to expand to a nice, even number for scheduling/league purposes. Obviously, Garber will want to follow the template from the last few years of expansion (soccer-hungry markets with deep pockets, a la Seattle and Toronto). I think the candidates are, in this order, Atlanta, Miami and St. Louis. What do you think?
The obvious follow-up to the first follow-up question: When will the league go to a single-table format?
