Sporting Kansas City notched its first road victory in more than five months Saturday, when it defeated San Jose 2-1 at Avaya Stadium. Afterward, the attention narrowed to defender Kevin Ellis, whose 81st-minute back-heel goal served as the game-winner.
But on the other end of the field, goalkeeper Tim Melia quietly put together one of his best all-round performances this season. He was rewarded Monday with a spot on the MLS Team of the Week.
While Melia made only three saves, all three were quality stops, including one only 15 seconds into the match and another quick-reaction save less than a minute into the second half. The game was tied on each occasion.
Ellis was included as part of the “bench” roster for the team of the week.
