ABOUT SPORTING KC (11-12-7, 40 points): In sixth place in the Western Conference, Sporting KC has a prime opportunity to cement its playoff status against the Earthquakes, who are trying to climb above the ride line. But Sporting KC is winless over its past 12 road matches, one game shy of tying a club record. Winger Graham Zusi (calf strain) and defender Lawrence Olum (abdominal strain) are unlikely to play.
ABOUT SAN JOSE (7-8-13, 34 points): The club has been steadily fading in the Western Conference playoff picture with only two wins over its last 17 matches. Forward Chris Wondolowski has scored just three goals over the last 16 games. And that’s been a theme for the Earthquakes — a lack of scoring. The club is last in MLS in goals (0.96 per match) though it ranks second in the league in goals against (1.07 per match).
BOTTOM LINE: Sporting KC hasn’t been able to solve San Jose away from home since 2001. It is winless on the road against the Earthquakes over the last 18 MLS matches, including the postseason.
PREDICTION: San Jose 1, Sporting KC 1
