THE OFFENSE

The Friday morning practice lacked some fire as the players were caught between the excitement of Thursday’s first day, featuring plenty of 11-on-11 work, and Saturday’s first day of hitting in full pads. … In seven-on-seven drills, wide receiver Dwayne Bowe went one direction and Alex Smith threw the ball in another direction. … A.J. Jenkins made a diving catch on a pass from Smith but also had a drop. Fred Williams plucked a high pass out of the air from Tyler Bray. … Bray also hit tight end Demetrius Harris between two defenders. Tight end Travis Kelce had another good day in team work.

THE DEFENSE

Inside linebacker Derrick Johnson showed blitz on the first play of 11 on 11. … In the nickel defense, cornerbacks Marcus Cooper and Ron Parker lined up on the left side, and Chris Owens manned the right, relegating Sean Smith to the left. … In the dime, Jerron McMillian took the spot of the injured Sanders Commings. … Newly signed linebacker Josh Magua made his presence felt by breaking up a pass intended for Harris.

INJURY REPORT

Defensive back Sanders Commings (foot strain), guard Rokevious Watkins (disk in his back), running back Joe McKnight (knee) and cornerback David VanDyke (hamstring) did not practice. Tight end Sean McGrath remained out of camp while contemplating retirement.

SATURDAY’S SCHEDULE

8:15 a.m., American Family Fun Day, $5 admission.

The number

305 Defensive end Mike DeVito’s weight is the same as last year’s, but he went on a special diet and conditioning program to better distribute his weight to make him quicker and more agile. “I feel good, I feel lean, I can tell from running around it’s made a difference. (Saturday in pads) is the real test.”
