Cornerback Phillip Gaines will miss the Chiefs' regular-season finale against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday with an illness.

Quarterback Alex Smith (lacerated spleen), receiver Donnie Avery, cornerback Marcus Cooper, center Eric Kush, guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and defensive end Nick Williams are also inactive.

The decision to make Cooper inactive is interesting, given Gaines' illness. This leaves the Chiefs with three active cornerbacks — Sean Smith, Jamell Fleming and Marcus Cooper — though safety Ron Parker has extensive experience at cornerback and figures to get the nod there, if needed.

For the Chargers, receiver Keenan Allen, running back Ryan Mathews and center Chris Watt are starters who highlight the inactives. Cornerback Greg Ducre, defensive end Damion Square, nose tackle Ryan Carrethers and linebacker Cordarro Law are also inactive.
