Linebacker Derrick Johnson is the Chiefs’ nominee for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, recognizing the NFL player who exemplifies outstanding sportsmanship on the field.
The winner is determined by a vote of current NFL players and announced the night before the Super Bowl. He will receive a $25,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to be directed to the charity of his choice.
“It would mean so much,” Johnson said. “I take a lot of pride doing the right things on and off the field, and that just speaks volumes especially for this team. I got a lot of great guys around me, it makes it easy to fit in with a bunch of good character guys that I have on the team.
“I want to win it, but I’m more so focused on I want it on my team. The guys in this locker room think a lot about me. A lot of guys outside the locker room don’t know me, but to win it for the Chiefs, that’s big.”
