Broncos cornerback Chris Harris, a former Kansas star, hasn’t given up on his alma mater.

Kansas takes a 0-9 record to TCU this weekend. Harris, a Pro Bowler last year, was a member of the Jayhawks’ 2007 Orange Bowl title team and finished his college career in 2010.

The Jayhawks haven’t had a winning season since 2008 and have won 12 games in the previous six years.

“It’s definitely sad,” Harris said.

Harris spent his final season playing for Turner Gill, who replaced Mark Mangino. Gill was fired after two years, and Charlie Weis arrived. To Harris, that’s when things went bad.

“Charlie Weis, he definitely messed up a lot of things in the program,” Harris said.

Nobody has succeeded since Mangino. Gill went 5-19. Weis went 6-22 in his two-plus seasons, and Kansas lost seven of eight games under interim coach Clint Bowen.

But Harris likes the current direction under first-year coach Dave Beaty.

“I’m happy with coach Beaty,” Harris said. “Even though we’re taking a lot of losses, he’s doing a good job changing the atmosphere.”
