Jamaal Charles is one of several Chiefs players from Texas, but it’s unlikely any of the others had a larger cheering section at NRG Stadium for the team’s season opener against the Texans.

Charles paid the rental for two buses, filled with fans from his Port Arthur, Texas, hometown, to Sunday’s game, which the Chiefs won 27-20.

“It was exciting to be back home and be back in the stadium I’ve played in before,” Charles said.

Charles scored three touchdowns and rushed for 62 yards in Texas’ 70-3 victory over Colorado in the 2005 Big 12 championship.

Sunday, Charles rushed for 57 yards and caught five passes for 46 yards and a touchdown. He caught short pass from Alex Smith and turned into a 7-yard scoring reception.

“Once I saw that ball come my way there was nothing stopping me,” Charles said. “I was going to get into the end zone.”
