The Chiefs’ took some steps to address their dwindling inside linebacker depth on Monday, signing Ja’Gered Davis, the club announced.
To make room for the signing, the team released receiver Adam Drake.
The move comes two days after a practice in which the team had three healthy players at the position in Derrick Johnson, Ramik Wilson and James-Michael Johnson.
Undrafted rookie Justin March, a mainstay with the second team, missed practice because of a knee injury he suffered in Saturday’s preseason win over Arizona. Starter Josh Mauga also missed practice because of a heel injury he suffered last week, while fifth-round rookie D.J. Alexander missed practice because of a high ankle sprain.
Davis, 24, is listed at 6 feet and 238 pounds, spent two weeks on the Chiefs’ practice squad last season after being released by New England. Davis was quickly signed off the Chiefs’ practice squad by Washington, where he recorded four tackles in three games.
Davis, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2013, also appeared in three games for New England last year, recording a tackle.
