Chiefs sign YouTube star Alex Tanney

The Chiefs' latest signing at quarterback might not have a chance to unseat Matt Cassel as the starter, but if they need a guy to throw a pass out of a second-floor bedroom window to a receiver riding in the back of a moving pickup truck, Alex Tanney is their man.

Nearly 2.5 million people have watched the "Alex Tanney Trick Shot Quarterback" video featuring Tanney throwing footballs not only to people in trucks, but also through basketball hoops and hitting the goal post uprights from 50 yards.

The Chiefs signed Tanney, an undrafted rookie from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill., on Tuesday. The stats show the 6-4, 220-pound Tanney set NCAA Division III records for passing yardage (14,249) and touchdowns (157). But his trick shot YouTube video shows a wider array of skills that Cassel might have trouble pulling off.

Still, Tanney will need to show much in the way of conventional NFL quarterbacking in the next few weeks if he's to stick with the Chiefs, who seem entrenched at the position with Cassel, Brady Quinn and Ricky Stanzi. Tanney's best shot to stick with the Chiefs would be as a practice squad player.
