Monday’s practice was intense, but there was a light-hearted moment.

Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin lined up on the right side and took a lateral from Alex Smith, who drifted off to the left.

The gadget play was on. But Maclin hesitated, trying to find the seams to throw it back to Smith. He finally got it off, only to bounce the pass. In baseball terms, Maclin threw a 55-foot pitch.

Players on the sideline let out a chorus of boos.

Later, the Chiefs attempted more trickeration, and this time the heave of wide receiver Frankie Hammond Jr. fell incomplete.
