The Chiefs’ Jeff Allen got the first crack at Donald Stephenson’s right tackle position.

Allen, who is the Chiefs’ starter at left guard, took Stephenson’s place in the lineup at right tackle Saturday against the Vikings in the third preseason game. Jeff Linkenbach started at Allen’s normal position, left guard.

Chiefs offensive tackle Donald Stephenson has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2014 regular season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Stephenson will be eligible to return to the Chiefs’ active roster on Tuesday, Sept. 30, following the team’s Sept. 29 game against the New England Patriots.

He is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games, but the Chiefs obviously wanted to get a close look at Allen against another team’s first-team units.

Other starters:

Franke Hammond at receiver for Dwayne Bowe.

Jaye Howard at defensive end for Mike DeVito.

Nico Johnson at inside linebacker for Joe Mays.

Sean Smith at cornerback for Ron Parker.

Daniel Sorensen at strong safety for Eric Berry.
