A decision was bound to come at some point, but still, it was a surprise to hear that Eric Hosmer had agreed late Saturday night to a contract with the San Diego Padres.
The deal came after spring training had started after a chilly hot stove during the offseason.
Hosmer was thought to have just two suitors: the Royals and the Padres. Both reportedly had offered seven year contracts, but Jon Morosi tweeted that San Diego was giving Hosmer an eight-year contract with an option to opt out after five seasons.
Although there was no confirmation of the deal, at least one Royals front-office member took to social media to congratulate Hosmer.

Mike Sweeney, who is a special assistant to baseball operations, tweeted: “@TheRealHos35 will go down as one of the greatest @Royals to ever wear Royal Blue. You will always be a ROYAL! Congrats brother! See you in San Diego...”
