For Pete's Sake

ESPN lays off NFL writer John Clayton, but he’s ‘keeping the ponytail’

John Clayton’s biography at ESPN notes that he is a senior NFL writer/commentator. Clayton also has a radio show and in 2007 was inducted into the writers’ wing of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

But on Wednesday came news that Clayton has been included in the layoffs at ESPN, which he confirmed with a series of tweets.

While his NFL resume is strong, it seems that many people know him best for one spectacular commercial.

Clayton, who joined ESPN in 1995, made perhaps the greatest “This is SportsCenter” ad of all-time. Gotta love that Slayer T-shirt:

Clayton had this sly nod to that commercial.
