For all the fun of, say, an epic Chiefs comeback, the dark side of sports unfortunately remains.
During a junior-college football game in California on Saturday night, a referee was trying to keep the peace when he was cold-cocked by a player. The Ventura County Star reported that the offending player is Mount San Antonio College lineman Bernard Schirmer, and that he was arrested on suspicion of battery of a game official.
Mount San Antonio College was playing Ventura College, and everyone was upset.
“I was on the bench talking and I heard everyone going crazy so I jumped up and saw (the official) on the ground,” Ventura College quarterback Jake Luton told the Ventura County Star. “That’s terrible. There’s no place for that in football.”
The official’s name was not released. He regained consciousness but did not finish the game, according to the County Star.
