Florida coach Will Muschamp didn’t have to be asked about sitting on the hot seat this season. Less than a minute into his opening statement Monday at SEC football media days, he brought it up.
“There will be a lot of chatter about hot seat business,” Muschamp said. “The way you combat that is having a winning football team, and winning football games, which is what we’re going to do.”
Last year’s 4-8 finish, the program’s first upside-down record since going 0-10-1 in 1979, has turned up the heat in Gainesville. The Gators went 3-5 in SEC play for the second time in Muschamp’s three seasons, and the middle year, the 11-2 squad of 2012 is starting to look like the aberration.
Also worth keeping in mind, Jeremy Foley, Florida’s athletic director since 1992, fired Ron Zook in 2004 after three seasons. Zook’s teams went 16-8 in SEC play. Muschamp’s teams are 13-11 in the SEC.
