Joe McKinstry, who led the Kansas City Kansas Community College women’s basketball team to a national title in his first season, won the Spalding NJCAA Division II coach of the year award Tuesday.

The award was given by the NJCAA Division II women’s basketball committee. McKinstry was an assistant on the Blue Devils men’s team in 2014-15 before taking over the women’s team in 2015-16. The Blue Devils finished 33-3, beating Illinois Central 81-59 for the championship. Along the way, they also beat previously undefeated and defending champion Johnson County for the Region 6 title.

McKinstry, a Kansas City native, started coaching at William Penn (Iowa), where he played point guard. He was an assistant coach for seven seasons before coming to KCKCC in 2014.
