MidAmerica Nazarene soccer falls short in NAIA championship game

MidAmerica Nazarene’s first trip to the NAIA national soccer championship ended in a 1-0 loss on Saturday in Delray Beach, Fla.

The Pioneers, seeded tenth, played toe to toe with top-seeded Rio Grande (Ohio) and pushed the game to overtime.

But 5 minutes into the extra period, Rio Grande’s Jeremy de Hoog won it in dramatic fashion with a 35 yard score on a free kick that reached the upper left-hand corner of the goal.

The Pioneers finished the season 18-6-1.

Rio Grande finished the season at 23-1 and was in its first championship match since 2008.
