Game of the week

Notre Dame at Temple

The only game between ranked teams this weekend involves Temple. Who saw this matchup in the preseason as one of the Irish’s toughest challenges? The No. 21 Owls, 7-0, opened the season with a victory over Penn State and has kept rolling. They lead with a stout defense, allowing 14 points per game. No. 9 Notre Dame is only the two-point loss at Clemson from a perfect season and is a contender for the College Football Playoff.

Upset of the week

California over Southern California

The Trojans pulled off a statement victory over Utah. The defense was strong, but Southern California faces one of the Pac-12’s top quarterbacks this week in Jared Goff. The 5-point underdog Bears have lost two straight after starting 5-0 and are capable of holding serve at home here.

Others to watch

Florida vs. Georgia (Jacksonville, Fla.)

The World’s Largest Cocktail Party is back to deciding things in the SEC East. The Gators and Bulldogs are the only teams in the division with winning records. There’s more pressure on Georgia here. The Bulldogs were expected to win the East. Florida figured to be in something of a rebuilding mode under first-year coach Jim McElwain. But the Gators are ranked No. 11.

Oklahoma State at Texas Tech

The undefeated Cowboys are a week away from the teeth of their schedule but this will no gimme. The Red Raiders were rocked by Oklahoma last week and unimpressive in beating Kansas a week ealrier, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes can fill up a stats sheet. Can Tech protect him? Oklahoma State excels at getting to the quarterback, led by end Emmanuel Ogbah, who leads the Big 12 with eight sacks.
