Turns out the highest-ranked player in Missouri’s incoming football recruiting class won’t be coming to Columbia this summer, after all.
Fort Zumwalt South running back Chase Abbington confirmed in a message to The Star that he will instead enroll at Hutchinson Community College. The news was first reported by PowerMizzou.com.
“That’s where I’ll be attending,” Abbington wrote. “And then going to Mizzou.”
Abbington, who is listed at 6 feet 4, 210 pounds, was the only four-star player in Missouri’s 2013 recruiting class, which checked in at No. 41 in the nation – the lowest in the Southeastern Conference – according to Rivals.com.
Back on Signing Day in February, ESPN senior coordinator of recruiting Jeremy Crabtree praised Missouri for landing an athlete of Abbington’s caliber. ESPN ranked Missouri’s class 38th nationally.
“He’s an athlete, a guy that can play anywhere on the football field,” Crabtree said. “He has that kind of talent.”
Abbington had offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Michigan State, Nebraska and UCLA.
