Missouri Western leads all-MIAA baseball team with five first-teamers

Missouri Western, the regular-season Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association champion, had five players on the all-conference team released Thursday.

Griffons shortstop Michael Schulze won MIAA player of the year honors after hitting .445 while scoring a league-best 63 runs. The MIAA pitcher of the year was Western’s Brandon Simmons, who led the league with a 2.80 ERA and 10 victories. The Griffons’ Buzz Verduzco was the coach of the year.

Also Thursday, Missouri Western held on for a 9-3 victory in the second round of the MIAA Tournament at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Schulze was three for five with two runs scored and an RBI.
