KU linebacker Tharp will forgo senior season because of injuries

LAWRENCE — Kansas senior linebacker Huldon Tharp is forgoing his final season of eligibility and leaving the Kansas program, KU coach Charlie Weis confirmed on Monday.

Tharp has battled injuries during his four years at Kansas, including a leg injury that forced him to miss the entire 2010 season. He also suffered a knee injury during his senior year at Mulvane High School.

“Physically, my body just can’t hold up anymore,” Tharp said. “I love KU and have enjoyed my time being a part of the football program. Thanks to Coach Weis’ encouragement, I am going to graduate this summer and head out into the real world.”

Tharp made 55 tackles while starting nine games at linebacker last season. In the Jayhawks’ initial spring depth chart, Tharp was replaced by redshirt freshman Courtney Arnick.

Starting linebackers Ben Heeney and Jake Love will both be back next season. Kansas will open spring practice on Tuesday.
