Kansas working on hoops series with San Diego State

Kansas appears close to signing on for a home-and-home basketball series with San Diego State, KU officials confirmed on Thursday. The series would begin next year in Lawrence, with the return game potentially coming during the 2015-16 season in San Diego.

KU is already set to play host to Georgetown at Allen Fieldhouse next season, the beginning of a four-year series, as well as a matchup with Duke in Chicago in the Champions Classic. KU is also expected to play another marquee non-conference game on the road.

San Diego State has played in three straight NCAA Tournaments under coach Steve Fisher, who is in his 14th season at the school. He previously spent parts of nine seasons at Michigan.

Fisher confirmed the series to the U-T San Diego newspaper this week.

“We’re looking to schedule some marquee games with national programs, and this opportunity presented itself,” Fisher

told U-T San Diego

. “Kansas was looking for a big game; we said: ‘We’re ready.’ This speaks to what Kansas thinks of our program and the appeal it will have to a national audience.”

San Diego State finished 26-8 last season after recording a 34-3 record and Sweet 16 appearance in 2010-11.
