Pitt State tops Division II preseason poll

The Fall Classic at Arrowhead Stadium should a clash of Division II titans once again.

Pittsburg State, the defending national champion, tops the preseason poll of the American Football Coaches Association.

Northwest Missouri State, the 2010 champion, is ranked third.

The Gorillas and Bearcats meet in their annual Kansas City contest on Oct. 13.

The MIAA landed a total of four teams in the top 25, with Missouri Western at No. 18 and Washburn at No. 20. Central Missouri and MIAA newcomer Nebraska-Kearney also received votes.

Pittsburg State won its second Division II championship last season, and returns 12 who started at least five games from a team that finished 13-1.

“The thing that stands out to me about our championship run was the team chemistry and leadership squad,” Gorillas coach Tim Beck said. “Hopefully we can match that this year.”

Northwest, which lost to Pittsburg in the Division II quarterfinal, has been ranked in 138 of 148 AFCA polls since 2000.
