Missouri wrestling coach Brian Smith has signed a five-year contract extension through the 2016-17 season, the school announced Friday. The contract includes an additional one-year extension through the 2017-18 season that kicks in May 1.
“We’re very happy to be able to announce this for Coach Smith and the rest of the Missouri wrestling program,” MU athletic director Mike Alden said in a statement. “Brian and his staff have turned Mizzou wrestling in to one of the nation’s elite programs, and we look forward to many more years of success under his watch at Missouri.”
Smith is the longest-tenured coach in the history of Missouri wrestling and is about to begin his 15th season. In that time, the Tigers have crowned four national champions, 26 all-Americans, 14 academic all-Americans and 40 academic all-conference honorees. Smith’s dual record is 173-82-3 and he has led the Tigers to seven top-15 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including a third-place finish in 2007. The Tigers won the Big 12 title last season.
