Two-time defending SEC Eastern Division champion Missouri is projected to be in another title chase.

The first major preseason poll was released on Thursday, and the Tigers were picked 23rd in the coaches poll. They’re one of eight Southeastern Conference teams in the top 25. The highest is Alabama at No. 3.

The Big 12 landed three teams, but two in the top four with TCU second and Baylor fourth.

The Horned Frogs and Bears were the first two teams out of the top four last season and missed the inaugural College Football Playoff won by Ohio State.

The Buckeyes are projected to pick up where they left off, at No. 1. Ohio State received 62 of 64 first place votes.

Last year, defending champions Florida State opened atop the coaches’ poll, and Ohio State was sixth.

The last team to start and finish first in the coaches’ poll was Southern California in 2004, a national championship that was vacated in the wake of NCAA rules violations.

Kansas State received enough votes to be 31st.
