Area college honors: Central Missouri quarterback wins MIAA offensive player of the week

Central Missouri senior quarterback Garrett Fugate is the offensive player of the week in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Fugate, from Blue Valley Northwest, completed 32 of 43 passes for a career-high 408 yards and two touchdowns in the Mules’ 38-34 road victory Saturday against Missouri Western.

The Mules, 3-0, moved up one spot to No. 13 in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division II poll. Northwest Missouri, 3-0, remained No. 1 and Emporia State and Southwest Baptist received votes.

▪ Kansas fell from No. 4 to No. 8 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I poll. The Jayhawks lost their first match of the season Friday to then-No. 14 Purdue, now ranked 10th. KU finished its nonconference schedule 11-1.

▪ Central Missouri’s Cheyanne Lyons was chosen women’s volleyball hitter of the week by the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Lyons, from Raymore-Peculiar, had 57 kills in 12 sets over the weekend as the Jennies went 4-0.

Central Missouri, 10-2, is ranked 10th in the Division II coaches poll. Rockhurst, 8-3, is 25th.

▪ Park senior forward Emily Key was chosen women’s soccer offensive player of the week in the American Midwest Conference after scoring hat tricks in two victories. She was also chosen as Park’s homecoming queen during the weekend.

▪ Park freshman middle hitter Aneisha Ford was chosen defender of the week in the American Midwest Conference. Ford, from Kearney, had at least four blocks in each of her three matches last week.
