Mavericks lose 5-1 to Americans in Game 3 of ECHL playoff series

The Missouri Mavericks came up ice cold in Game 3 of the ECHL’s Western Conference semifinals Wednesday, losing 5-1 to the Allen Americans in Allen, Texas.

Allen now leads the series 2-1.

“We did not play our game and we just weren’t good enough tonight,” Mavericks coach Richard Matvichuk said. “We know what we need to do and we will have a good practice (today) to get ready for Friday.”

The defending Kelly Cup Champion Americans jumped out to an early lead when defenseman Eric Roy connected with a slap shot just 31 seconds into the game. Then, Allen’s Vincent Arseneau scored his first goal of the playoffs.

Josh Holmstrom cut into the Americans’ lead with a short-handed drive to the net, the third short-handed goal of the playoffs for Missouri and Holmstrom’s third goal of the postseason.

Allen took advantage of a power-play opportunity at 13:59 of the second period when Greger Hanson scored to make it 3-1 Americans.

Missouri came back into the final period of regulation with an aggressive start, but Allen goaltender Riley Gill was able to hold off all of the Mavericks’ attempts in the crease.

Spencer Asuchak topped off the Game 3 scoring with back-to-back goals for the Americans. He scored an unassisted goal, followed by an empty-net goal with just 2 minutes remaining.

The Mavericks will play the Americans in Game 4 at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Allen Event Center. Fans are invited to watch all the action at the Missouri Mavericks’ official Round 2 away-game watch party locations: The Blue Line in Kansas City and Rock & Brews in Overland Park.
