Mavericks report: Missouri heading to Wichita before Christmas break

The Missouri Mavericks are coming off a weekend in which they picked up three of four points against the Alaska Aces at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. They lost 3-2 to the Tulsa Oilers on Monday and travel to Wichita for a game Friday before taking a break for Christmas.

Mavericks’ record: The Mavericks are 10-12-5 and are in fifth place in the ECHL’s Mountain Division.

Last week (1-0-1): The Mavericks never led in Friday night’s game against the Aces until Kyle Schempp gave them a 4-3 victory with a goal in the fifth round of a shootout. Darren Nowick scored two goals for Missouri, which rallied from a goal down three times in the game.

Schempp also gave the Mavericks a lead with a first-period goal on Saturday night, but Alaska’s Tim Coffman tied it with a goal in the third period. The Aces made two shots in the shootout to none for Missouri and won the game 2-1.

This week: The Mavericks wrapped up a three-game home stand Monday night with a 3-2 loss to the Tulsa Oilers. It was their first loss in regulation at home since Nov. 30.

The Mavericks’ final game this week will be at 7:05 p.m. Friday in Wichita. The Thunder has won the first two games of the season series, beating the Mavericks 4-1 on Oct. 21 and 4-3 on Dec. 11, with both games in Wichita. Missouri will play Wichita at home for the first time this season on Jan. 6-7. The Thunder is 11-10-1 and in fifth place in the Central Division. Wichita is 4-3 in December after dropping back-to-back games against the Allen Americans on Dec. 16 and Dec. 18.

Notable: Defenseman Gus Young was recalled from his loan to the Mavericks and traded by the Chicago Wolves to the San Antonio Rampage. Young had a goal and two assists in 13 games with the Mavericks. … Radoslav Illo picked up his 13th point of the season with an assist against Alaska on Friday. That tied his total from his rookie season of 2015-16. … Missouri had a goals-against average of 2.25 in its previous five home games going into Monday’s game. … All Mavericks games are streamed live on and on their mobile app.
