Kyle Schempp’s goal in the shootout pushed the Missouri Mavericks to a 4-3 win on the ice over the Alaska Aces on Friday night at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
After a scoreless overtime, neither the Mavericks nor the Aces were able to reach the back of the net in the first four rounds of the shootout. But after another miss by Alaska, Schempp came through with the winning goal.
The two teams played to a 3-3 tie in regulation.
The Aces had a 2-1 lead after the second period, but Darren Nowick’s goal 40 seconds into the third period tied the game at 2-2.
Alaska regained the lead at the 4:50 mark of the third on a goal by Justin Brenton. But the Mavericks’ Sam Povorozniouk knotted it up at 3-3 with his goal 7:51 seconds into the third period.
The two teams will square off again on Saturday at 7:05 p.m at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
