Much is new as the Missouri Mavericks begin their regular season on the road this weekend at Allen, Texas, against the team that eliminated them from last season’s Western Conference semifinals.

Leading the Mavericks, the defending Brabham Cup winners after posting the ECHL’s best regular-season record last season at 52-15-5, is a new head coach: John-Scott Dickson. And gone are the Mavs’ top two scorers from a year ago, Jesse Root and Tyler Barnes.

But the club, which plays its home opener next weekend against the Indy Fuel, has several reasons to be excited about what’s in store, including an existing affiliation with the New York Islanders, a new “working agreement” with the St. Louis Blues, a strong core of seven returning players and 16 newcomers who are loaded with potential.

“I’m really happy with the way our team has come together,” Dickson said in a statement. “ … Now that everyone is here, we are jelling as a team and excited to start the season.”

Saturday’s opener against the Americans starts at 7:05 p.m. Fans can listen to every Mavs game live at missourimavericks.com.
