Sporting Kansas City has a new highest-paid player in franchise history.

Midfielder Felipe Gutierrez, currently sidelined after sports-hernia surgery, has a base salary of $1.6 million, with his total compensation package reaching $1.65 million, according to figures released by the MLS Players Association on Thursday.

Roger Espinoza, the highest-paid player on last year’s team, is second behind Gutierrez at $900,000. Matt Besler and Graham Zusi are third and fourth on the list, respectively. Espinoza, Besler and Zusi are all set to become free agents after the season.

Newcomer Johnny Russell is earning a few pennies shy of $700,000 in guaranteed compensation, and newcomer Yohan Croizet is at $680,004, per the release Thursday. Defender Ike Opara ($342,916) and goalkeeper Tim Melia ($316,667) received raises after career-best seasons in 2017.

Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco is the league’s top-paid player at $7,115,555.67, followed by teammate Michael Bradley.
