The next one counts.
Sporting Kansas City closed out its preseason schedule Saturday with a 1-0 victory against Minnesota United and a 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders in Tucson, Ariz.
The club returns home Sunday — a week before it opens the regular season against the New York Red Bulls at Sporting Park.
Bernardo Anor scored the lone goal in the eighth minute of the morning scrimmage against Minnesota United — a match that saw Sporting KC utilize the bulk of its starting lineup for a full 90 minutes for the first time.
“It definitely showed in the last 20 or 25 minutes,” Sporting KC assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin said. “… It was necessary for these guys to push through not only physically but mentally through the entire 90 minutes. I think they managed that, along with the rest of the game, very well.”
Sporting KC used a mixture of veterans and rookies in the nightcap against Seattle's predominantly top unit. Sporting KC forward Connor Hallisey, a first-round draft pick, opened the scoring, and Seattle's Obafemi Martins supplied the equalizer shortly after halftime.
