Sporting KC falls to Real Salt Lake 2-1 in Desert Diamond Cup

Real Salt Lake upended Sporting Kansas City 2-1 late Wednesday night in the clubs' third match of the Desert Diamond Cup in Tucson, Ariz.

Facing a two-goal deficit, Dom Dwyer put Sporting KC on the board in the 66th minute of the preseason tournament match, only five 5 after he entered the match along with a group of the team’s starters. Dwyer headed home a crossing pass from midfielder Benny Feilhaber.

Real Salt Lake keeper Jeff Attinella stoned Bernardo Anor in his quality attempt to equalize the match in the 76th minute, and Dwyer narrowly missed a header later in the second half — both part of a 30-minute stretch dominated by a fresh Sporting KC group.

“The second group came in and took the energy up very high, (with) great movement off the ball, and created some great chances,” Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes said. “Their goalkeeper actually made a couple great saves.”

That preserved the lead initiated from Emory Welshman and Devon Sandoval, who scored for Real Salt Lake.

Sporting KC will close out its preseason schedule at 6 p.m. Saturday against Seattle. Vermes said he hopes to get his starters a full 90 minutes Saturday.
