FCKC has to settle for draw against Chicago

The unbeaten streak is still alive. But so too is an alarming trend for FC Kansas City.

The Blues extended their unbeaten mark to six straight games with a 3-3 draw in Chicago on Sunday afternoon, but they watched a late lead slip away for the third consecutive road match.

FC Kansas City took a commanding 3-1 advantage when Erika Tymrak scored in the 86th minute, only to watch Chicago’s Ella Masar cut the lead in half in the 90th minute and Lori Chalupny net the equalizer from the edge of the goalie box five minutes into stoppage time.

FC Kansas City, 7-4-5, has held leads into the 85th minute or later in each of its past three road matches — Seattle, Washington and now Chicago — only to settle for draws in all three.

The latest blunder Sunday spoiled the return of midfielder Lauren Holiday — formerly known as Lauren Cheney — after she missed the past two games for her wedding. She married NBA point guard Jrue Holiday in California last weekend.

Holiday made an immediate impact, tallying her team-best ninth goal of the season in the 17th minute on a rebound chance after keeper Erin McLeod stopped Melissa Henderson’s initial shot.

After Maribel Dominguez tied the game in the 41st minute, FC Kansas City regained the lead two minutes later on an own goal. Blues left back Kristie Mewis struck a shot off the crossbar, and the ball deflected off Chicago defender Taryn Hemmings and into the net, giving FC Kansas City a 2-1 lead at halftime.
