FC Kansas City plays Sky Blue FC to a 2-2 draw in New Jersey

FC Kansas City came within 5 minutes of becoming the second team in National Women’s Soccer League history to beat Sky Blue FC at Rutgers University’s Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J.

Instead, Sky Blue forward Monica Ocampo scored goals in the 85th minute and the second minute of stoppage time as FC Kansas City settled for a 2-2 draw.

The Blues, 6-4-2, took an early lead when Sky Blue defender and captain Christie Rampone slipped, allowing FC Kansas City forward Erika Tymrak a one-one-one opportunity.

Tymrak dribbled right around Sky Blue goalkeeper Brittany Cameron and booted the Blues into the lead in the 13th minute.

Sky Blue, 8-2-3, controlled much of the possession during the next 60 minutes, but FC Kansas City managed to find the next goal anyway.

Lauren Cheney padded FC Kansas City’s lead in the 75th minute when she ran at the Sky Blue defense and chopped the ball a few times before beating a diving Cameron with a right-footed shot across the face of goal and into the left side-netting.

That looked as if it would be enough for FC Kansas City, which lost 1-0 to Sky Blue FC in the inaugural meeting between the teams May 25 at SM North District Stadium.

Instead, Sky Blue finally sneaked one past goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart and then tied the match in the dying minute.

Before the match, the Blues announced the signing of forward Tiffany Cameron, who is expected to be available for Sunday’s home match against the Portland Thorns.

Cameron, a Canadian international player and Toronto native, originally signed with the Seattle Reign as a free agent in February, but she was released when the club signed Megan Rapinoe last week.
