The Royals added some extra protection to their infield depth before Saturday’s game against Oakland, recalling Orlando Calixte from Class AAA Omaha and optioning outfielder Reymond Fuentes to Omaha.

Calixte, 23, hit a home run Friday night for the Storm Chasers and has appeared in seven games this season.

Christian Colon was set to start Saturday at shortstop in place of Alcides Escobar, who left Friday night’s 6-4 win over the A’s in the seventh inning after Brett Lawrie slid into his left leg at second base. Escobar suffered a left knee sprain and contusion and was considered day-to-day by the team. Escobar was not ruled out of playing Saturday.

Fuentes, 24, was recalled Friday after Terrance Gore was optioned to Class AA Northwest Arkansas. Gore was originally recalled Wednesday when right fielder Alex Rios was placed on the disabled list because of a broken bone in his hand.
