Blue Valley West senior Alex Larson hesitantly walked over toward the scorecards as meet officials recorded the second group’s final tallies.
She first saw the 8, which heightened the intensity of the moment. Then came the 5, which brought the quick release of a sigh and a little laugh.
Her score of 84 at the Heritage Park Golf Course in Olathe was safe and would win the Kansas Class 6A Blue Valley regional. She shot a 44 on the front nine and 40 on the back to help lead the Jaguars to the team title.
“I definitely was not happy with the front nine, but I told myself, ‘Alex, you need to turn it around,’ ” Larson said. “On the back nine I grabbed a hold and just kept trucking. It turned out well.”

Her score and victory also secured her spot in the Class 6A state tournament, which will take place on Monday at Terradyne Country Club in Andover near Wichita.
“After three years of hard work, it has finally paid off,” Larson said. “For my senior year, having new coaches is totally different, but it has been so much fun.”
Blue Valley West had three more Jaguars finishing in the top 10. Nikki Reyes took third after losing a tiebreaker for second to Olathe Northwest’s Rosie Klausner with an 85. Eunha Kim added a fourth-place finish at 88, and Molly Saporito finished sixth with a 91.
“There were a lot of kids that usually play in the lower numbers but stepped up,” Jaguars coach Aaron Anderson said. “Everyone was very consistent, and our seniors were great today.”
Catie Ducharme and Allison McCausland will also go to state with the Jaguars.
