Friday night football is here! Reminds me of a song

It’s here. It’s Friday. In the fall, that means one thing.

High school football!

But among the 32 games tonight involving Missouri side Kansas City area high school football teams, one storyline rises above all others -- THE HEAT!

Sixteen games tonight have adjusted their start time to decrease the sweat level. I’ve worked at The Star for almost 29 years and I can never recall a similar situation happening on a Friday night.

The Star will have reporters out and about tonight, detailing the plays, the winners and, yes, the heat.

Reporter Tod Palmer will head out to the Liberty at Winnetonka game and check out just what effect the heat is taking on players, coaches, fans and the overall environment of the evening. Does a 60-minute delay mean a different approach for teams and their approach? Tod is going to get us all some answers. Heck, I’d make Tod interview the heat if I could.

Reporter Sam McDowell is headed to Staley to watch the Falcons play host to Lee’s Summit West. Staley all-everything quarterback Trent Hosick has graduated. Lee’s Summit West last season looked like a team you wanted no part of, then bowed out sooner than expected in the playoffs. Both of these teams have something to prove tonight.

The Star will also have game stories from two other match-ups: Raytown South at Park Hill and St. Joseph Central at Blue Springs.

Park Hill is unleashing a new high-octane offense. Raytown South is motivated by fact it came up one game short of a conference title last season.

Over at Blue Springs, coach Kelly Donohoe will lead the Wildcats and stud running back Dalvin Warmack into its opener wearing the label “Missouri Class 6 state champions” ... Will the Wildcats repeat?

So many questions. Tonight, the answers start to trickle in.

Drink plenty of fluids, Kansas City area football fans. Get crazy in the bleachers!

Because, as my boy Buster Poindexter use to sing in that goofy song years back, it will be Hot Hot Hot! (Mostly, I was jealous of his hair. )
