There has been a shakeup in the fall high school sports lineup.
Volleyball has added a state championship site and football has shifted its title-game locations, according to a Kansas State High School Activities Association news release.
The Hutchinson Sports Arena at Hutch Community College will host the Class 4A and 3A State Volleyball Tournament, KSHSAA announced. Classes 6A and 5A will play at the Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina; the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka has been phased out in those classes because of a conglomeration of Class 4A and 1A.
KSHSAA evaluated other venues' upgrades and settled on the decision, KSHSAA Volleyball Administrator Cheryl Gleason said in the release.
“The 2018-2019 school year will see a change in our school classification system which will result in a decrease in the number of tournaments for this state event," Gleason said in the release.
Hutch has hosted the Class 3A basketball tournament since 1975. That experience should help preparations for adding two more KSHSAA events, Hutch athletic director Josh Gooch said in the release.
"The City of Hutchinson has made a commitment with the renovation of the Hutchinson Sports Arena to bring quality championship-caliber events to our community," Gooch said in the release. "The relationship between the KSHSAA, Hutchinson Community College and the City of Hutchinson continues to grow with the addition of this great event."
With the addition, here is the complete list of locations from 2017 and what to expect in 2018:
In football, KSHSAA has merged Class 4A's two divisions and added Class 1A to the list of state tournaments. With that, the number of events remains the same, and the venues have not changed, but state assignments have.
Class 2A will take over at Salina's USD 305 District Stadium, and Class 4A will meet up where the first division played in 2017, the Hummer Sports Complex in Topeka.
Because Classes 2A and 1A have split for the 2018 football tournaments, Class 1A will remain alone at Fort Hays State's Lewis Field Stadium.
