St. James Academy used a good showing in singles and doubles to finish second at the Class 5A state tournament on Saturday.
Leading the way for the Thunder was junior Catherine Rieke. She advanced all the way to the singles final, where she fell to Andover senior Grace Ball, 6-1, 6-2. Ball was 5A runner-up the past two years.
St. James also had a big boost from the doubles team of Bridgette Dwyer and Meredith Bierbaum. After dropping a close semifinal to Arkansas City’s eventual doubles champions, the Thunder duo snagged third with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Wichita Maize’s Emma Wituk and Kennadee Utech.
Despite a back injury that forced her to serve underhand, DeSoto freshman Issa Sullivan took third in singles. She also lost to Ball, but defeated Bishop Carroll’s Brittany Steven, 6-1, 6-2. Sullivan, whose only other loss this season was in the regional final, finished 15-2.
