Jim Colbert and his partner Jim Thorpe win a title at the Legends of Golf tournament

The Kansas City Star

Former Kansas State golfer Jim Colbert and his partner, Jim Thorpe, won the Legends Division for players 65 and older at the Champions Tour's Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf on Sunday.

Colbert and Thorpe finished the tournament at 11-under 141.

They shot 23 for nine holes on the Top of the Rock par-3 course Sunday.

Colbert and Thorpe won by 3 shots over Bruce Fleisher and Larry Nelson.

It was the second straight year Colbert won a title in the tournament. Last year, when it was played in Savannah, Ga., he and Bob Murphy won what was called the Demaret division, which was for players who were at least 70 years old.

Colbert said it was good for golf to have a tournament use a par-3 course. Top of the Rock is the first par-3 course ever used in an official PGA Tour event.

"We had big crowds," Colbert said, "and this venue is really good for the game of golf because you can play nine holes and have fun. It's good for the game of golf that people see this."

Funk-Sluman team wins Champions division

In the Champions Division for players under 65, Fred Funk and Jeff Sluman shot 6-under 48 for 18 holes at Top of the Rock and beat Jay Haas and Peter Jacobsen by 1 stroke. Funk and Sluman finished at 20-under 159.

Tom Pernice Jr. of Kansas City and partner Bob Tway tied for fifth at 167. Tom Watson and Andy North tied for 10th at 169.
