Watson Challenge tees off Friday with Rob Wilkin aiming for a repeat

The 2017 Watson Challenge is set to take place this weekend (Friday-Sunday) at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park.

Legendary Kansas City golfer Tom Watson started the event in 2007 to spark more interest in the sport around the area. The tournament’s field is made up of the best professionals and amateurs from the Kansas City area.

Watson, 67, who has won 39 PGA Tour events in his career as well as 14 PGA Tour Champion events, has won the Watson Challenge five times.

The Watson Challenge benefits The First Tee of Greater Kansas City, whose mission is to “impact the lives of young people in the local community by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life enhancing values through the game of golf.”

Rob Wilkin, the head pro of Heritage Park Golf Course in Olathe, is the defending champion and will be playing in this year’s challenge. Both Wilkin and Watson tee off at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Tickets can be purchased at Milburn Country Club for $25 and are valid for the entire three-day, 54-hole tournament. All juniors under 18 years of age and under do not need a ticket.
