Former Mizzou star Sophie Cunningham, a fan favorite, signs new 1-year WNBA deal

Sophie Cunningham is keeping the ”Tres Leches” together with Caitlin Clark and Lexie Hull in Indiana.

The former Mizzou women’s basketball star has signed a new one-year deal to play her second season with the Indiana Fever, the team announced Sunday. Cunningham, Hull and Clark make up part of the Fever’s core that helped them win the 2025 Commissioner’s Cup Championship.

The WNBA veteran is going into her eighth season and signed a deal under the league’s new CBA, where players will make the highest salaries in league history.

The details of Cunningham’s contract are unknown, but the minimum salary for a veteran of seven to nine years is $292,500.

Cunningham, 29, was an unrestricted free agent to start the year. She averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 30 games for the Fever last year before a torn MCL ended her season. As a rotational 3-and-D specialist, she’s coming off her best season as a shooter: 46.9% from the floor and 43.2% from deep (3rd-best in the WNBA).

Cunningham initially was traded to the Fever from the Phoenix Mercury last February. She spent six years in Phoenix, playing with the likes of Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner, and shot 42.2% from the field and 36.2% from beyond the arc in 182 games.

The Columbia native is planning to balance her basketball career with her stardom as an influencer, podcaster and media personality. In addition to hosting her own podcast, Cunningham be will be part of USA Network’s WNBA studio coverage and contribute to USA Sports’ digital and social platforms when she isn’t playing.

The WNBA’s new season begins May 8 and the Fever host the Dallas Wings on May 9 to begin their season.
